3 Tips To Prevent Injury

It’s that time of year again. Big health and fitness goals have been set, and efforts to achieve those goals have begun. You spent the last few months resting a prior injury, but a couple of weeks and workouts into the new year and your pain is reminding you that injury hasn’t gone anywhere.

Here are three tips that will keep injuries from interrupting your 2016 goals:

  1. Don’t abuse your body – This is a reoccurring tip because it is so critical. More isn’t always better, and in the case of exercise a sustainable approach is the smart thing to do. It is COMPLETELYokay to have your share of easy days in the gym. Consistency is key when it comes to results, and it is very difficult to be consistent if you are injured.
  2. Don’t train through pain – This one is relatively straight forward. “No pain, no gain” is horrible advice, and best suited for the 1980 Jane Fonda workout videos it came from. If you are experiencing pain, be very cautious, as this is your body’s warning signal that something is going wrong.
  3. Seek professional care– This is very important. If you are in pain you need to seek professional care from an expert. For every self-treatment video on YouTube, you can find an equally dangerous redneck instructing you on how to perform your own tooth extraction. Neither treating your musculoskeletal injury nor dental problem on your own is advised.

Being injured sucks. Resting your injury won’t fix it. Stretching your injury won’t fix it. The pain may go away, but rest assured the dysfunction is still present.
